Smith, Audrey

Biography

Audrey trained as an illustrator in a large college of art, subsequently illustrating a number of children’s books. In her painting, she was greatly influenced by the Northern tradition and began by being equally interested in people and place, first in Birmingham as a student and later in Stockport and Liverpool when she lived in those areas. Over the years she has renewed an interest in architecture, which she enjoyed in her student days.

Statement

‘Colour has always been important to me and I now use acrylic inks which have a marvellous colour range. I found that over the years, many paintings relied on various interpretations of light. Light is an important part of pilgrimage and an exhibition of Pilgrims Route down the Lleyn Peninsular to Bardsey Island, was followed by a series of pieces around light and candles. This is being followed by paintings of light and water.’
