Midgley, Julia

Statement

‘My practice revolves around drawing, etching extends that practice. Larger developed works on paper refer to sketchbook records; ancient sculpture; eccentric characters from paintings, folk art; and horses. These works are sometimes metaphorical and sometimes autobiographical. Influences- Goya, George Grosz, Ana Maria Pacheco, Paula Rego. Documentary drawing/reportage is a major activity.’

‘In 2000, I was Artist in Residence for Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Granada Television’s Regional Programmes. Since then similar projects have been undertaken for Liverpool Biennial at Huyton Village; Liverpool Cathedral Centenary; and The Excavation of Chester’s Roman Amphitheatre. Such projects demand that I act as a fly on the wall recording life through drawing.’
