Research & education

Derek Boak teaches Art at Rainford College.

He has been a member of Manchester Academy of Fine Arts since 2004. In 2007 he started a series of collaborative research projects between his school and Members of Manchester Academy.

Derek has this to say about the research:
“The research section of our website is aimed at students and will show studios, working methods of artists and further examples of their work. The work of students who have attended workshops with the artists will also be shown and members of the academy have answered a questionnaire drawn up by students who attended an exhibition of one of our members work. The section will be a work in progress and it is hoped it will help students inform their future practice.”

These collaborations were recorded and have been made available as an online educational resource . This resource is not only of great value to students of art but also gives testament to the artistic lives of the Academy Members involved . These collaborations are on going . About Friends

In 2010 The Friends of MAFA was set up in order to give people interested in the Arts an opportunity to become involved in the North Wests’ leading Art Organisation, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts.

Members of the Friends society receive a unique opportunity to become involved with the Academy’s program of events. Some organised around MAFA Exhibitions, such as exhibition previews, gallery talks and workshops and then others organised outside the exhibition program, such as open studios, social events and field trips.

Those Friends wishing to become further involved with the Academy have the opportunity to join the

Friends Committee, helping on projects to promote the arts in the North West through their involvement with Manchester Academy of Fine Arts.

Upon joining the Friends society each new member receives a welcome pack containing their membership card, an membership badge, a copy of Academy member Sheila Dewsburys’ book ‘A History So Far’, describing the history of the Academy over it’s 150 years, drawing from personal accounts and archive material. Plus a welcome letter from the Academy’s President.

All of these are contained within an elegant folder, inside of which are two pockets to hold preview invitations, artist statements,

postcards, letters and all the memorabilia from an active involvement in the Friends society, each folder becoming that members personal archive of a time spent as a Friend of Manchester Academy of Fine arts.
