Mary Campbell
My work is grounded in drawing. I make sketches from direct observation of people and places which I find intriguing or significant. I value these drawings in their own right and I also use them as a basis for printmaking. I particularly enjoy making collagraph plates which enable me to manipulate lines and shapes and create compositions of form. I ink up the plate as a multicolour image in one printing, which is not an exact process but gives freedom to explore colour and texture. The finished print, always mysteriously unpredictable, shifts away from realism but evokes the content of the original encounter.
