Fielding, Catherine

Biography

Catherine is a figurative painter. She received her training, at a time when Art Schools generally were obsessed with experimentation. The work she did at Edinburgh was firmly grounded in Life Drawing and Painting, Composition and mostly Medieval and Renaissance art history.

Catherine still has a passion for both painting and art history, and most of her lecturing career was as an art history tutor. Studying two separate disciplines at the same time wasn’t easy – but looking back, Catherine would definitely do it again.

Statement

‘I prefer to work directly from the subject if I can, and having been brought up in industrial S. E. Lancashire in a period of post- war change, I still have a preference for urban themes. I experiment with all kinds of painting and graphic media but particularly oil, and the abstract qualities of composition are a major consideration.’
