Bowie, Janis

Biography

Janis left a teaching career in Design and Technology and Art in 2006 to concentrate on her own painting and having been a member of The Saddleworth Group of Artists for many years, was accepted as a member of The MAFA in 2014.

Always favouring mainly figurative and sometimes landscape work in pastel, watercolour and recently acrylic, in 2005 Janis thought she would try something new. This was to paint pictures of Textile Mill Interiors and has been the main part of her subject matter ever since.

Having worked in a Textile Mill for a few years prior to teaching, she felt she had a connection and wanted to preserve the memory of this once thriving industry and an important part of our British heritage.

These paintings involve the machines as aesthetic compositions, sometimes zooming in on the detail of interesting parts and a few even depict figures working on them to show the unison of man and machine.
