Jude Tucker – Artist & Stone Carver:
The first works I showed with the Manchester Academy were very large charcoal drawings based on the natural world. I would spend many hours walking with my sketch books across the cliffs and open countryside. Since then, there have been many changes and upheavals in my life which have led me to enter the wonderful world of stone carving.
Starting as a holiday break in Portland this journey has taken me to Bath to do a masonry course and then to the stone yard in the City and Guilds of London Art College where I was fortunate enough to be part of a project to design and carve grotesques for St George’s Chapel in Windsor.
After graduating in 2006 I returned to Stratford on Avon and set up my own workshop where I make sculpture which is inspired by natural forms. I believe in the integrity of the material and the importance of hand tools to ensure the final sculpture will hold as much energy and inner life as possible.
I work with English and French limestones such as Caen and Syreford, Ancaster Weatherbed, and various Alabasters. I also teach in my workshop and run SeaSculpt residential carving courses.
