MAFA has a long history and many notable artists have been linked with us, including L. S. Lowry, Alfred Waterhouse, Ford Madox Brown, Norman Adams and Anne Redpath. MAFA was originally affiliated to the Royal Manchester Institution on Mosley Street, now Manchester Art Gallery. It continued to be based there until 1997 when the galleries were refurbished.

Over the years, MAFA has acquired a large archive related to its past exhibitions, members and presidents. These collections are held at Manchester Art Gallery but can be accessed for research and study. For enquiries about MAFA artists, artworks, books and exhibition catalogues from the archive, please contact us to request information or arrange a visit.
