Ian Thompson 1997-2003

MAFA President 1997-2003

Born 1937 in Manchester, Ian Thompson was brought up in Preston and trained at the Regional College of Art, Manchester. He taught in comprehensive schools in Preston, and at the end of his teaching career became Director of the School of Creative Arts in Education in the Birmingham Polytechnic Faculty of Education.

In 1987 Ian chose to retire to work full-time as an artist and served as MAFA’s President from 1997-2003. Ian was an approved artist with the Church of England and undertook many public commissions for churches and schools including altar frontals, stained glass windows, sculptures of the Risen Christ and Last Supper, woodcarvings of the Virgin Mary and aluminium altar crosses.

In 1996 Ian was elected Associate Member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors. Examples of his work, including sculpture in steel and wood, paintings, textiles and stained glass, are in various collections throughout the UK.
