James Patchell Chettle 1934-45

MAFA President 1934-1945

James Chettle was born in Sale and his family had a cotton business in Manchester buying and selling cotton and fabric. He mainly exhibited at the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts and Royal Society of British Artists (RBA). Chettle was elected to the RBA in 1935 and later served as President of that Society as well as holding the post at MAFA.

Among his friends was the painter, L.S. Lowry. There are nine works by Chettle the collection of Manchester Art Gallery.
