MAFA President 1993-7
Peter Oakley was famous for his semi-abstract paintings and murals – including the Pete McCarthy Memorial, which was installed at the Pyramid Arts Centre, Warrington. He was born in Stafford in 1935 and trained at Stafford and Leicester’s colleges of art in the 1950s before taking an MA at Manchester Polytechnic in 1987. He was Head of Art in two Leicester secondary schools from 1959 to 1971 and then became a senior lecturer at Edge Hill College in Ormskirk.
As well as becoming president of MAFA, Peter was also a member of Cheshire Artists’ Network. As well as painting and printing, he was also responsible for many artists’ residencies, murals, illustrations, theatrical set and costume designs and public artworks.
