Equus Film and Arts Festival

Jane Braithwaite

MAFA member Jane Braithwaite has recently taken part in the Equus Film and Arts Festival, hosted from Lexington, Kentucky in the USA. The EQUUS Film & Arts Festival aims to share stories about horses, through film, art and literature and was founded in 2013. Renowned for her equestrian paintings, Jane was interviewed about her inspiration and techniques by the Festival’s Director, Lisa Diersen.

This year many horse lovers joined the festival via streaming platforms, films were released from 13-15 November and watched in the comfort of their own home.

Although Jane completed the Foundation course at Manchester College of Art in the early ’70s, she went on to lead a busy life as a Primary School teacher for 23 years and later, she ran a saddlery and country clothing business for 15 years. Throughout this time Jane also competed with her own horses, it is only over the last 6 years she has returned to painting.

Jane has exhibited locally and nationally since 2014 and has won a number of awards for her work – Patchings Open Art Competition 2014 and Best in show at The Horse in Art 2016 Society of Equestrian Artists (SEA) Annual Open Exhibition, amongst others.

She enjoys the challenge of portraiture and painting figures in the context of cityscapes however, painting horses in a variety of situations such as racing, polo and eventing is where her heart truly lies.
