Membership of Manchester Academy of Fine Arts is awarded through election in recognition of the quality and originality of an artist’s practice. We welcome applications from professional practising artists who are committed to developing their work and contributing to an artist-led organisation.

Who can apply?

Applications are open to professional practising artists working primarily in:

  • Painting
  • Drawing
  • Printmaking
  • Sculpture

We welcome a wide range of artistic approaches, techniques and styles. Selection is based on the strength, originality and professional quality of your current practice.

What we look for

As an artist-led Academy, we’re looking for artists who:

  • Demonstrate a distinctive and accomplished professional practice.
  • Are actively engaged in making and exhibiting work.
  • Value dialogue, collaboration and the exchange of ideas.
  • Wish to contribute to the life and future of the Academy.

Membership is awarded through election and reflects both the quality of an artist’s work and their commitment to becoming part of the MAFA community.

Associate Membership

Successful applicants are elected as Associate Members.

Associate Membership provides the opportunity to become part of MAFA’s exhibiting and artist community while contributing to the Academy’s ongoing programme and activities.

After two years, Associate Members become eligible for consideration for election to Academician. Progression is reviewed by Council and reflects both an artist’s professional practice and their contribution to the Academy.

Before you apply

Before submitting an application, please read the application guidance to ensure you understand the selection process, the information you’ll need to provide and what happens if you’re shortlisted.

If your application is successful, you’ll receive a Welcome Pack containing the Academy’s Membership Rules, guidance and information for new Associate Members.
