Biography
I was born in Manchester and attended Manchester High School of Art. I studied Graphic Design at Manchester College of Art (now MMU). I then worked in advertising, which led me to work as an art therapist, followed by a long career in the NHS and the voluntary sector. During my working life I have always drawn and painted, influenced by Impressionism, German Expressionism, and particularly by the American artist Edward Hopper. Growing up in inner-city Manchester I was inspired both by the vast empty Pennine Moors and by the industrial heartland of the city. I’ve always enjoyed being outdoors: the main focus of my work is landscape painting, much of this en plein air. I also work from drawings and colour sketches. I paint directly, trying to capture the mood and even the weather of the day, concentrating on light, form and veracity.
I continue to be inspired by the city I was born in and its surroundings. I paint its canals, rivers, and mills, and the modern world of busy streets and changing high rise skyline. I find Manchester fascinating – its subject matter never disappoints.
In addition to being a member of MAFA, I also belong to Saddleworth Group of Artists and to Stockport Art Guild and taken part in many of their exhibitions.
