Manfredi, Lucy

Biography

Lucy was born in Stockport, Cheshire. After studying A level art and 3 other subjects, she completed an art foundation course at Stockport college.. specialising in life drawing. Lucy then joined the animation with illustration BA HONS course at Manchester Met University, graduating in 1997. Her tutor during the degree course was illustrator Chris Sharratt of Jackie Wilson fame. Chris encouraged Lucy to further study for a masters degree, and this happened in 1998 at Brighton University. The course specialised in sequential design and imagery/film. Lucy decided to focus on figure drawing and observation with the intention of producing a storyboard and then a film.

Lucy was taught by Professor George Hardie; a graphic designer and illustrator, best known for his work producing cover art for rock bands and musicians. Professor Hardie designed the cover art for Pink Floyds ‘Dark side of the moon’.

Lucy has produced film to advertise for Zeneca ICI, and was a finalist for BBC young film maker awards.

After several years as a textile designer, working on surface patterns, Lucy had a brief pause in her career to start a family in 2004, but continued drawing, painting and observing.

Today, she resides in south Cheshire, and continues to focus chiefly on painting, using movement and strong marks, using multiple tools..with the medium of oil paints that are applied in thick layers. Her subjects are mainly children.. her own, and others she knows personally. She tries to capture mood and expression, that resonates to the viewer. The layers add detail which can be found which often tells a story. She is working towards an exhibition later in the year.
