Biography

Melanie Wilks has an MA in Fine Art -Sculpture from Manchester Metropolitan University. She is a member of the Yorkshire Sculptors Group as well as MAFA, exhibiting regularly with
both organisations throughout the year.
In a career spanning nearly 40 years, Melanie has produced many publicly sited sculptures, as well as sculpture for private homes and gardens. Her sculpture can be seen in towns, parks and public spaces across Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.
Her most recent public commission was for a series of 5 relief sculptures, hand carved in Yorkshire Sandstone that commemorate an historic Mining disaster at Morley Main Colliery in 1872, where 34 men and boys lost their lives. The reliefs are mounted into a wall that faces the site of the original colliery bordering the steps down to Morley Railway station, near Leeds. See photos

Statement

Melanie is inspired by themes, often biographical in nature that explore the human condition, her sculpture reflects what is happening in life at the time of making or in the past experience.
Materials and the process of making are both important to her working practice. Melanie specialises in the carving of stone, working intuitively with this natural material using hand held tools.
