How to apply to become an Associate Member

Applications for Associate Membership open once a year. When applications are open, you will be able to complete and submit your application online.

Please read the eligibility criteria and the guidance below before applying.

Before you apply

You will need to prepare:

  • A completed online application.
  • A short artist’s CV of no more than 50 words.
  • An artist’s statement of no more than 50 words.
  • Six high-quality images of six recent works.
  • Images in JPEG format, with a maximum file size of 1 MB each.
  • The title, medium and dimensions of each submitted work.
  • A £30 non-refundable administration fee.
    Your six submitted works should represent your current practice and give the selectors a clear sense of the quality, originality and direction of your work.

Stage one: Online application

Complete the online application form and upload all supporting information and images before the published deadline.

Once your application has been received, MAFA will send you an acknowledgement. Your application will then be considered during the first stage of the selection process.

Stage two: Selection Day

If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to attend the second stage of the process, known as Selection Day.

You will be asked to bring:

  • Six original artworks representing your recent or current practice.
  • A small supporting portfolio, which may include additional work, drawings, photographs or sketchbooks.

The original works may include pieces shown in your initial online application where appropriate.

MAFA members are entitled to attend Selection Day and vote on the election of new Associate Members.

If your application is successful

Successful applicants will receive a formal invitation to become an Associate Member of MAFA.

New Associate Members will also receive a Welcome Pack containing the Academy’s Membership Rules, information about membership and guidance on participation.

Associate Members become eligible for consideration for election to Academician after two years. Progression is reviewed by Council and reflects both the artist’s professional practice and their contribution to the Academy.

If your application is unsuccessful

If you are not selected, you may apply again with new work once two years have elapsed.

The selectors’ decision is final, and MAFA is unable to provide individual feedback on unsuccessful applications.
